Osijek, situated on the banks of the River Drava, is the largest city in eastern Croatia.
With 17 parks in all, you will find no shortage of places to take a break in the heart of the city amid greenery and shade.
Osijek also has a wonderful riverside promenade, a very pleasant and highly popular outdoor swimming pool and straight wide roads which are perfect for cycling.
This part of the country with its mighty river is also ideal for anglers. Osijek is also a great destination for architecture lovers: its "Tvrđa" or Citadel is an extensive complex of beautifully preserved buildings built in the Baroque style by the Habsburgs. Tvrđa is the place where you will find many of the city's cultural institutions such as the Slavonian Museum, the Archeological Museum and the Permanent Exhibition of Water Life. It is also a place where Osijek's young at heart like to go out to party.
The city offers various playgrounds: football, handball, basketball, tennis courts, etc. The recreational and sports centre Copacabana, located on the left bank of the Drava river, provides opportunities for various water sports during the summer months.
Osijek's surroundings are well worth exploring: head for region of Baranja and you will find Kopački rit, perhaps Croatia's most significant Nature Park, a fragile wetland of great beauty, and a host of agritourism facilities in pretty, rural villages where you can explore the vineyards and taste local wines. The abundance of game and agriculture has made Osijek the country's semi-official gastronomical capital. Local dishes include traditional Slavonian-style specialities (kulen, paprika-flavoured sausage, other kinds of sausages, ham, bacon, dairy products), as well as venison and fish dishes such as the famous riblji paprikaš (fish stew made with paprika). Also, two brands of beer are brewed in Osijek.
The City and University library in Osijek is located in the Europe Avenue and is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Prior to using library facilties, services and computer rooms, students need to register and obtain a member card. Within the Library, there is an American Corner and an Austrian reading room, holding books and magazines in the English and German language, respectively. Besides the main City and University Library, there is the library of the Faculty of Civil Engineering Osijek providing its students with print, audio and visual materials and other information services within area of civil engineering.
Five days of ISUCCES will be fulfilled with the Osijek Summer of Culture days, probably the biggest multicultural summertime event in Osijek.
The Osijek Summer of Culture is famous for the quality of its programme and the artistic dynamism that is released in the city during the summer time. Each year, shows, movies, concerts, exhibitions are programmed to give life to the city and its historic and cultural centre: Tvrđa.
